Install Mode Versus Bundle Mode

Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches have two modes of operation, Install mode and Bundle mode. This document describes the two modes and how to set the mode of operation.

Finding Feature Information

Your software release may not support all the features documented in this module. For the latest caveats and feature information, see Bug Search Tool and the release notes for your platform and software release. To find information about the features documented in this module, and to see a list of the releases in which each feature is supported, see the feature information table.

Use Cisco Feature Navigator to find information about platform support and Cisco software image support. To access Cisco Feature Navigator, go to www.cisco.com/go/cfn. An account on Cisco.com is not required.

Prerequisites for Install Mode Versus Bundle Mode

All the switches in the switch stack should be running at the same license level as the active switch. For information about license levels, see the System Management Configuration Guide, Cisco IOS XE Release 3SE (Catalyst 3850 Switches).

Restrictions for Install Mode Versus Bundle Mode

The Install mode and the Bundle mode of operation have the following restrictions:

  • Booting from a USB driver or TFTP in Install mode is not supported.

  • Booting the switch in Bundle mode consumes more memory than the Install mode because the packages are extracted from the bundle and copied to the RAM.

  • Auto-upgrade feature is disabled by default and is not available in the Bundle mode.

Information About Install Mode Versus Bundle Mode

Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches have two modes of operation, Install and Bundle. Two or more switches must be in the same boot mode to form a switch stack.

The Install mode is the recommended mode for booting a switch.

Install Mode

The Install mode uses a package-provisioning file named packages.conf in order to boot a switch. In addition, there are a number of .pkg files in the flash drive. We recommend that you do not alter the packages.conf and .pkg files unless directed by a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineer.

Bundle Mode

The Bundle mode uses monolithic Cisco IOS images to boot a switch. The Bundle mode consumes more memory than the Install mode because the packages are extracted from the bundle and copied to RAM.

Switch Stack Membership

A standalone switch operates as the active switch . You can connect one standalone switch to another standalone switch to create a switch stack containing two stack members, with one of them acting as the active switch. You can also connect standalone switches to an existing switch stack to increase the stack membership.

Verifying and Converting the Mode of Operation

Verifying the Mode of Operation

Perform the following tasks to verify the mode of operation:

Before You Begin

Ensure that the TFTP server is reachable.

Note

The recommended size of the TFTP block size to 8192. To improve the TFTP blocksize, use the ip tftp blocksize bytes command in global configuration mode.

Procedure
  Command or Action Purpose
Step 1 enable

Example:
Device> enable

Enables privileged EXEC mode.

Enter your password if prompted.

Step 2 show version

Example:
Device# show version

Verifies the mode of operation.
Step 3 end

Example:
Device# end

Returns to privileged EXEC mode.

Example: Verifying the Mode of Operation

The following example shows a sample output for the show version command used for verifying the mode of operation:
